Bitcoin checkout
Buy an eSIM with Bitcoin
Spend BTC on mobile data in 200+ countries. On-chain or over Lightning, with no account, no email and no ID — and the credit you buy never expires. Here is the whole checkout, step by step, including what happens when a payment goes sideways.
Before you start
An eSIM-capable phone
iPhone XS or later, Pixel 3 or later, Galaxy S20 or later, and most recent Android flagships.
A Bitcoin wallet
Anything that can pay a standard on-chain address or a Lightning invoice. Custodial or self-custody, either works.
About two minutes
No account, no email, no ID, no app to install.
If you're not certain about the phone, check it against the list of eSIM-compatible devices before you send any Bitcoin.
Paying in BTC, step by step
- 1
Choose how much credit to buy
Credit is loaded in US dollars, from $5. Your first order also carries a one-time $5 eSIM setup fee, so a first purchase is $10 total with $5 of it spendable on data. What you pay is what lands on the eSIM.
- 2
Pick "Pay with crypto" at checkout
Card and crypto sit side by side on the same screen. Crypto has no upper limit, so if you're loading more than $200 it's the only route — card payments are capped at $200 per transaction.
- 3
Choose Bitcoin on the invoice page
Checkout hands off to a Cryptomus-hosted invoice, where you select your coin and network. Pick Bitcoin on-chain, or Lightning if you want it settled in seconds. The invoice is priced in USD and quotes you an exact BTC amount.
- 4
Pay from your wallet
Scan the QR code with your Bitcoin wallet, or copy the address and amount across. For Lightning, scan the BOLT11 invoice. Send the exact quoted amount.
- 5
Pay inside the one-hour window
Each invoice stays open for one hour. Set your fee so the transaction confirms comfortably inside it rather than sending at the minimum rate during a busy mempool.
- 6
Scan your eSIM and save your credentials
As soon as the payment confirms, your balance is credited and the order page shows your eSIM QR code, the LPA string and a direct-install link. It also shows a one-time access code and PIN — write those down before you close the tab, because with no account and no email there is nothing else that gets you back in.
On-chain or Lightning?
Both are Bitcoin and both credit the same balance. The difference is how long you stand there waiting and what the transfer costs you.
| Bitcoin on-chain | Lightning | |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement | Roughly ten minutes, one confirmation | Effectively instant |
| Fees | Whatever the mempool costs that day | Near zero |
| Affected by congestion | Yes — a low fee can miss the invoice window | No |
| Best for | Larger top-ups where a few minutes doesn't matter | Small top-ups and anyone standing in an airport |
| Wallet needs | Any on-chain BTC wallet | A Lightning wallet with channel capacity or a custodial one |
Bitcoin isn't the only option — Cryptomus handles 300+ cryptocurrencies at the same checkout. If you'd rather pay in something else, see the full list of crypto payment options.
When a payment doesn't go to plan
Most Bitcoin checkouts are boring, which is the point. These are the cases that aren't, and exactly what happens in each:
- You overpay. The order still goes through. Overpayment is accepted as payment in full and your eSIM is provisioned as normal — the extra isn't returned, so don't round up on purpose.
- You underpay. An invoice that isn't paid in full is not credited automatically. There's a one-cent tolerance and nothing beyond it. Don't send a second transaction; keep the order reference and contact support.
- The invoice expires before your transaction lands. Don't pay again. Take the order reference from your order page URL, send it to support, and let a human match the payment to the order.
- The payment is confirmed but the page is still spinning. The order page keeps polling and will finish on its own. If it doesn't, the reference shown on that screen is what support needs to find your payment.
- You change your mind. Bitcoin payments are final once confirmed — there is no chargeback and no reversal. Where a refund applies at all it is issued as store credit on your balance, never back to your wallet. Since that credit never expires, it keeps its value for the next trip.
What Bitcoin buys you here
Not just a payment method — a different shape of product. Your BTC becomes US dollars of credit on the eSIM, metered per megabyte at the published rate for whichever country you're standing in, with no validity window attached. You can check the per-GB rate for your destination before you commit a single sat, and anything you don't spend stays on the eSIM indefinitely. There's no bundle to burn down before a clock runs out, which matters more than usual when the money you paid with is volatile.
And nothing in the flow asks who you are. No account, no email, no document upload — the details of that are on our page on buying an eSIM with no KYC.
Frequently asked questions
How much Bitcoin do I need to buy an eSIM?+
A first order is $10 — $5 of spendable credit plus the one-time $5 eSIM setup fee — and the invoice converts that to BTC for you at checkout. Later top-ups start at $5 with no setup fee. There is no upper limit on crypto payments.
Do I have to send the exact amount?+
Send the amount the invoice quotes. Overpayments are accepted and the order completes; underpayments are not credited automatically, with only a one-cent tolerance. If you send too little, don't send a second transaction — quote your order reference to support instead.
Do I need an account or an email to pay in Bitcoin?+
No. There is no sign-up step, no email field you must fill in and no identity check. Your order lives at a private order-page link, and the access code and PIN shown after payment are what get you back to it later.
Does buying an eSIM with Bitcoin make me anonymous?+
It removes the bank trail, which is the part most people care about — no card, no statement line, no billing address. Be clear-eyed about the rest though: on-chain Bitcoin is pseudonymous rather than anonymous, and the transaction is public forever. If a public ledger entry is the thing you're avoiding, choose a different coin at checkout.
Does my Bitcoin buy a bundle or a balance?+
A balance. Your BTC becomes US dollars of credit sitting on the eSIM, billed per megabyte at the published rate for whichever country you're in. There is no validity window, so credit you don't spend on this trip is still there for the next one.
Can I pay for a second eSIM with the same Bitcoin payment?+
No — one order provisions one eSIM. If you top up an existing eSIM instead, the credit goes onto that same profile and you keep the QR code you already installed. No reinstall, and no setup fee the second time.
